Elizabeth Vance, PhD

Senior Lead Auditor & Director of Communications, Vanderhelm Research

Dr. Elizabeth Vance leads the methodology review function across Vanderhelm Research’s institutional audit programme. She is the reviewer of record on every Vanderhelm publication issued in 2026 and is responsible for the firm’s triple-blind review standard, the conflict-of-interest register, and the public corrections policy set out in the Editorial Standards.

Her research interests sit at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the procurement economies that AI is rapidly reshaping. Recent published work includes the 2026 audit of AI bid writing and tender automation platforms in UK public-sector procurement, two parallel comparative analyses of the WordPress AI SEO plugin market and the emergent WordPress Answer Engine Optimisation category, and the firm’s January 2026 strategic audit of directory submission services. Her commentary on the structural compression of the UK bid-writing workforce by AI-native procurement tools has been cited in coverage by the Financial Times, The Economist, and the BBC’s Tech Tent.

Before joining Vanderhelm, Dr. Vance held research fellowships at the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk and at the Oxford Internet Institute, where her doctoral work examined the propagation of algorithmic bias in early generative AI retrieval systems. Her thesis, defended in 2022, was supervised jointly by the Departments of Computer Science and of History and Philosophy of Science. She holds a BSc in Computer Science from Imperial College London, an MSc in the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in Information Systems from Cambridge’s Department of Computer Science and Technology.

Dr. Vance is based in Washington, D.C., where she also directs Vanderhelm’s North American communications operation and serves as the firm’s primary point of contact for press, regulatory enquiries, and the Office of the Editor.
